Strawberry Fields Forever

Having followed Trashy Diva on instagram for some time, I was in love with the gorgeous vintage reproduction prints and the variety of cuts they had available in each design. You can imagine my delight when the opportunity arose to review one of their brand new prints! After much deliberation, I decided on the 1940s cut dress in their new Berry Chantilly print.

Broader shoulders, rouching details and bias cut, A line skirts…some of my favourite things about 40s day dresses

While  50s style full circle dresses are a common sight in the pinup clothing scene, finding a slim fitted, broad shouldered 40s design among repro companies is a lot harder. The only 40s style dresses I own are genuine pieces from the era and with vintage items in my size becoming rarer than hen’s teeth, I was all too glad to find a company reproducing the 40s silhouette.

Dress by Trashy Diva, Bag by H&M Kids, Shoes and Strawberry brooch are Kmart. Hair piece by Moi.

I normally wear an Australian size 14 (40″ bust, 28″waist and 40″ hips) and decided to go with the size 8 in this Trashy Diva dress. When it arrived, I was terrified I had made a mistake! The dress looked so delicate and petite, i felt that my ample bust and very generous booty was going to cause the seams to split.
I was wrong and as you can see, the dress fits like a glove!

The below-the-knee skirt  on the dress combines bias cut and straight cut paneling to give the dress an A-line shape typical of 1940s day dresses. I normally wear quite fabric heavy, pleated skirts and was surprised  to see how slimming this cut was on my hips. Despite being slim cut it was not clingy and accentuated my silhouette perfectly.

The Trashy Diva 1940’s Dress features a low-cut front and back neckline with vintage-style gathering. The low neckline on both sides of the dress makes it more accomodating for those of us whose cups runneth over.

The rouching at the front and shoulders helps keeps us busty gals from looking “pigeon breasted”. Being a bit modest with my cleavage I added a vintage  brooch to secure the front but I can assure you, it is still tasteful without this addition as illustrated by the beautiful Ashley from Southern California Belle here.

The underbust of the dress is sewn in sections for a sleek and flattering fit and the middle sections are lined for even more waist control.

The dress features a concealed back zipper which wasn’t too hard to do up by myself. The mister was incredibly pleased that he was no longer on call for zip up duty with this little number. At the top, the dress is secured by two sturdy hook and eye closures to nip in the waist providing a stunning shape.

Asides from the flattering cut of the dress, I absolutely adored the feel and look of the fabric. The dress is constructed of a gorgeous, soft stretch rayon. Even though it was a boiling 37 degrees in Perth today, wearing this dress almost felt like being out in the nude! Be warned though, stretch rayon does crinkle and crumple when it gets wet and requires a delicate hand when being ironed. I ironed my dress before heading out in it.

The pattern on the dress is true to 40s style. It actually reminded me of a similar pattern on some fine Bone China I had thrifted a week ago. This plate is from 1947. See how similar the colours and patterns are? Its little things like this that fill me with glee. It is extremely hard for us tan and olive toned pinups to find colours in repro lines that dont wash us out or clash with our skin but I am pleased to report that the yellow featured in this print is a warm, buttercup yellow that looked amazing against my olive toned skin.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with this dress. The colours, fit and design were true to the information and photos featured on the website. The fabric was light and breathable and all zippers and fastenings were in order and easy to manouevre single handedly. A perfect dress to wear on hot Australian summer days when you cannot imagine wearing a full skirt and Petticoats.

I will definitely be purchasing more dresses in this exact style. I am a berry,  berry satisfied pinup!

Until next time, dear reader.
